Family Promise of Hawaiʻi (FPH) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that prevents and ends homelessness for children and their families. Founded in 2005, FPH operates emergency shelters to give families a safe place to sleep, study, and get back on their feet; provides individualized case management and rental assistance to help families navigate and overcome their challenges; and organizes community-based opportunities to help families build skills and social capital. Each year, FPH serves hundreds of families on Oʻahu and Maui.
The Community Engagement and Development Coordinator will build FPH’s capacity to engage and raise awareness of community members by updating and implementing effective, sustainable community outreach and engagement strategies, increase volunteer engagement and opportunities, and enhance the marketing of FPH. This position reports to the Director of Donor and Community Relations.
This 12-month position is offered through AmeriCorps VISTA. AmeriCorps is the federal agency for national service and volunteerism. Key Responsibilities
Community Awareness and Engagement (50%)
Increase awareness of Family Promise of Hawaiʻi by coordinating communications and maintaining a dynamic brand presence through FPH’s social media platforms, email newsletter, website, and other channels.
Engage more community members in service of FPH’s mission by helping to plan and coordinate fundraising and outreach events — including working with vendors, community partners, and other stakeholders — and attending external community events.
Share how FPH’s work is transforming lives by capturing the stories of families served by FPH through photos, videos, and interviews.
Collaborate with the FPH team to cultivate new donors and steward existing donors through events and communications that showcase the impact that donors are making.
Volunteer Coordination and Engagement (50%)
Support FPH’s ability to grow and serve more families by coordinating and expanding the frequency of its volunteer opportunities.
Work with the FPH team to recruit, retain, and celebrate volunteers from a variety of sources, including civic groups, schools, businesses, congregations, and more.
Provide an on-site presence for volunteers to organize meals and supplies, coordinate workdays, and record hours.
Preferred Qualifications
Strong verbal and written communication skills to engage diverse stakeholders effectively and share impactful stories through various mediums.
Creative marketing abilities to promote initiatives and maintain brand consistency.
Proficiency in digital tools and platforms for outreach and content creation, including social media platforms and website content management systems (CMS).
Experience in event coordination with attention to detail and relationship-building.
Understanding of volunteer management principles to create meaningful experiences.
Ability to conduct effective community outreach and build relationships.
Strong organizational and time management skills for multitasking.
Adaptability to changing priorities and dynamic work environments.
Genuine passion for community service and positive social impact.
Eligibility
Be 18 years or older.
Hold one of the following citizenship or legal residency statuses: US citizen, US National, Lawful Permanent Resident (i.e. Green Card status), and persons legally residing within a state. Examples of persons legally residing within a state may include those holding the following classifications: refugee, asylee, temporary protected status throughout VISTA service, and holding Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status.

Living Allowance and Benefits
Through AmeriCorps VISTA, you’ll address community challenges where the need is greatest. Serve in an office setting and help fight poverty while building your professional skills and earning additional benefits.
AmeriCorps provides a modest living allowance while you are serving in the VISTA program. The living allowance is paid biweekly and deposited directly into your bank account. The living allowance covers basic necessities such as housing, food, and utilities. Federal income tax deductions, if applicable, are withheld from the living allowance.

Benefits through the AmeriCorps VISTA program include:
10 personal days for vacation, personal days off, or religious observances. 10 days of medical leave for illness, injury, or medical appointments. Family leave and emergency leave are also available in certain situations. Military service and jury duty can also necessitate a leave of absence, and both are covered.
Healthcare benefits: If you do not have health insurance or other health coverage during your term of service, you are eligible to enroll in the AmeriCorps VISTA Health Benefit Plan, which is available at no cost. If you have health insurance or other health coverage during your service term, you may enroll in the AmeriCorps VISTA Healthcare Allowance, a reimbursement program that covers out-of-pocket costs associated with healthcare.
AmeriCorps offers relocation travel assistance and a settling-in allowance if you are moving more than 50 miles from your home to serve as an AmeriCorps member with the VISTA program.
When you successfully complete your year of service in the VISTA program, you will be eligible to receive the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award (education award) or the end of service cash stipend. For members starting service on or after October 1, 2023, the value of the education award is $7,395.00 for full year members. The cash stipend is paid in your last two living allowance payments, and you can use it however you like.
If you have children under the age of 13, you may qualify for the AmeriCorps childcare benefit offered to members serving with the VISTA program.
As an AmeriCorps member serving in the VISTA program, there are several benefits available that can help you manage, or even reduce, your federal student loans and potentially lower your overall student debt.
Once you've successfully completed service in AmeriCorps VISTA, you will receive one year of non-competitive eligibility for employment in the federal government. This special hiring status enables you to apply for federal jobs with the advantage of not having to go through the standard public competitive selection process. That means that you can be appointed to federal positions that may not be available to the general public. In addition, your application could be processed faster than others.
