Hawaiʻi’s youngest keiki are at the greatest risk of experiencing homelessness. Each year, thousands of children in Hawaiʻi wake up wondering where they’ll sleep tomorrow — with potentially lifelong impacts on education, health, and well-being.
Founded in 2005, Family Promise of Hawaiʻi is uniquely focused on serving families with children experiencing homelessness, with teams on Oʻahu and Maui.

About the Honorees
A father-daughter duo: two generations, one mission
This year's Luminary Award honors a father-daughter duo whose commitment to Hawaiʻi's families spans nearly two generations. David Reber spent almost 50 years practicing law while co-founding the Hawaiʻi Appleseed Center for Law & Economic Justice and leading the Legal Aid Society of Hawaiʻi — both champions for housing justice. His daughter, Emily Reber Porter, COO at MacNaughton, has carried that legacy forward, guiding the company's philanthropy toward housing and homelessness solutions and helping open Waikiki Malia's doors to families displaced by the 2026 kona low flooding. Together, they show what a family legacy of generosity looks like in action.
Meet the Honorees
David Reber
David J. Reber was a partner of the Honolulu law firm Goodsill Anderson Quinn & Stifel for over 45 years. He retired in 2023 as the firm’s senior partner with a practice focused in the corporate, securities and mergers and acquisitions fields. David co-founded Hawai’i Appleseed Center for Law and Economic Justice and served as its President for 20 years. He was a director of the Legal Aid Society of Hawai’i for a decade, and he served as legal counsel to, and later a director of, the Oahu Economic Development Board and the Honolulu Symphony Society.
Emily Reber Porter
Emily Su-lan Reber Porter is the Chief Operating Officer at MacNaughton, a former technology executive, and former attorney including at Goodsill Anderson. Committed to her community, she is an officer and director of MacNaughton Foundation, a trustee of Punahou School, and advisory board member of Housing Hawai’i's Future. She is a former board member of Child and Family Service, Hawai’i Women Legal Foundation, Domestic Violence Action Center, and Oahu Transit Services Inc., among other community organizations.
