Housing Scholarships
Housing Scholarships help families with children get housing or keep the home they have, and build the skills to stay housed for the long term. Family Promise of Hawaiʻi offers Housing Scholarships on Oʻahu and Maui.
A Housing Scholarship is an investment in your family’s future, like a school scholarship. Family Promise helps with housing costs while you work one-on-one with a case manager on goals you choose.
How it works
-
Reach out. Fill out the form at familypromise.help, or ask an organization you work with to refer you. We’ll call you back and confirm whether your family is eligible.
-
Build skills. Work with your case manager on a plan for employment, job training, budgeting and other goals.
-
Get help with housing costs. While you’re in the program, we help with costs like rent, back rent, security deposits and utilities, based on what your family needs.
-
Stay housed. Your family keeps its home on its own, with follow-up support available after the scholarship ends.
What your family receives
-
Your own case manager, with regular one-on-one meetings
-
Help finding a place, applying and working with your landlord
-
Coaching on jobs, budgeting, banking and credit, saving and your rights as a renter
-
Connections to child care, benefits and health care
-
Help with housing costs for a few months up to a year, depending on what your family needs
Who is eligible
Families with children who are at risk of losing their housing or already experiencing homelessness. That includes families living in a car or shelter, families staying temporarily with relatives or friends, and families about to lose their home. Two-parent families, single parents, pregnant mothers, grandparents raising grandchildren and multigenerational households are all welcome to apply.

Support Housing Scholarships
Housing Scholarships are a new approach to ending family homelessness in Hawaiʻi. Each scholarship pairs a housing subsidy with one-on-one coaching, so families don’t just get into housing — they graduate with permanent housing they can sustain on their own. The model builds on Family Promise of Hawaiʻi’s more than 20 years of experience housing families.
Why it matters
Each month, Family Promise of Hawaiʻi hears from about 150 new families looking for help. Young children face a higher risk of homelessness than people of any other age, and a stable home during those early years shapes the rest of their lives. Housing Scholarships are designed to grow to meet that need.
Fund a scholarship
Scholarship funding opportunities begin at $10,000, which covers a short-term scholarship: about three months of housing support plus coaching and case management. A gift of $10,000 or more supports a specific family. Gifts of any size are combined with other funding to complete scholarships for more families.
Individuals and companies can support Housing Scholarships through a donation, sponsorship or grant. Named and endowed Housing Scholarships are also available.
